Wallerstein Laboratory Nutrient Broth (WLN)

Differential Liquid Medium for Brewery, Winery & Fermentation Microbiology
Catalog Number: AS-1321

Overview

Wallerstein Laboratory Nutrient Broth (WLN) is a differential liquid microbiological medium developed for the isolation, detection, and enrichment of yeasts, bacteria, and molds commonly encountered in brewing, winemaking, and beverage fermentation environments.

As the liquid counterpart to WL Nutrient Agar, WLN Broth is particularly useful for microbial enrichment, culture maintenance, and early detection of spoilage organisms in beverages. Its acidic pH closely mimics beer, wine, and fermented drinks, allowing stressed or low-level contaminants to recover and proliferate for reliable downstream identification.

Ausamics WLN Broth is manufactured for consistent performance in quality control, research, and industrial fermentation laboratories.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Differential liquid medium for yeasts, bacteria, and molds

  • Optimised for brewery, winery, and beverage microbiology

  • Supports recovery of beer spoilage bacteria, wild yeasts, and LAB

  • Acidic pH (5.5 ± 0.2) simulates real beverage conditions

  • Ideal for microbial enrichment and QC screening

  • Suitable for routine industrial testing and academic research

Typical Applications

Brewery Microbiology

  • Detection of beer spoilage organisms

  • Monitoring of lactic acid bacteria and wild yeast contamination

  • Quality control of raw materials and finished products

Winery & Beverage Testing

  • Screening for spoilage yeasts and bacteria in wine, cider, kombucha, and soft drinks

  • Fermentation monitoring and hygiene verification

Fermentation Research

  • Enrichment and maintenance of beverage-associated microorganisms

  • Teaching and applied research in food and fermentation microbiology

Principle of the Medium

WL Nutrient Broth provides a balanced nutrient environment with an acidic pH that selectively favours microorganisms associated with fermented beverages. The liquid format allows efficient resuscitation and enrichment of stressed cells, enabling earlier detection of contaminants before visible spoilage occurs.

Technical Specifications

  • Medium Type: Dehydrated liquid culture medium

  • Final pH: 5.5 ± 0.2 at 25 °C

  • Format: Powder (for broth preparation)

  • Appearance (prepared): Clear to lightly turbid broth after growth

Preparation (Typical)

  1. Suspend the recommended quantity of dehydrated medium in purified water

  2. Heat with gentle agitation until fully dissolved

  3. Sterilise by autoclaving at 121 °C for 15 minutes

  4. Cool to room temperature before inoculation

(Exact preparation instructions may be adjusted according to laboratory protocols.)

Storage & Shelf Life

  • Dehydrated medium: Store sealed at 15–25 °C in a cool, dry place

  • Shelf life: Up to 4 years when unopened and stored correctly

  • Prepared broth: Store at 2–8 °C and use according to laboratory SOPs
