Yeast Mold Broth (YM Broth, YMB)
Yeast Mold Broth (YM Broth, YMB)
General-Purpose Liquid Medium for Cultivation & Enumeration of Yeasts and Moulds
Product Identification
General Information
Product Name: Yeast Mold Broth (YM Broth, YMB)
Catalogue Number: AS-1383
Medium Type: Liquid fungal culture medium
Form: Dehydrated powder
Product Overview
Yeast Mold Broth (YM Broth), also known as YMB, is a nutrient-rich, general-purpose liquid medium formulated for the cultivation, enrichment, and enumeration of yeasts and moulds. The medium contains peptones and yeast extract as nitrogen and growth-factor sources, with dextrose providing a readily fermentable carbohydrate.
YM Broth maintains a slightly acidic pH (~6.0), favouring fungal growth while inhibiting many bacterial contaminants. Its liquid format makes it particularly suitable for enrichment, suspension preparation, biomass production, and growth-curve studies.
YM Broth is widely used in food microbiology, pharmaceutical and cosmetic quality control, environmental monitoring, and research laboratories.
Principle of the Medium
Functional Components
Yeast Extract: Provides B-vitamins and essential growth factors
Peptone / Proteose Peptone: Nitrogen and amino acid source
Dextrose: Primary carbon and energy source
The slightly acidic pH enhances fungal recovery while limiting bacterial growth.

Preparation Guidelines
General Preparation
Dissolve 18 g of dehydrated medium in 1 L of purified water
Heat gently with agitation until completely dissolved
Dispense into tubes, flasks, or bottles as required
Sterilise by autoclaving at 121 °C for 15 minutes
Cool to room temperature before inoculation
Incubation
Recommended Conditions
Moulds: 25–30 °C
Yeasts: 30–35 °C
Incubation time: 2–7 days, depending on organism
Visible turbidity or biomass indicates fungal growth. Microscopic examination may be used for confirmation.
Storage & Stability
Storage Conditions
Dehydrated medium: 15–30 °C, dry and tightly sealed
Prepared broth: 2–8 °C, protected from light
Use within the recommended shelf life for optimal performance.
