Overview
4-(Dimethylamino)benzaldehyde (DMAB) is a high-purity aromatic aldehyde widely used as a chromogenic reagent in biochemical assays, analytical chemistry, and organic synthesis. It is best known as the key component of Ehrlich’s reagent, which is routinely employed for the qualitative detection of indoles, including tryptophan, tryptamine, and related compounds.
DMAB reacts with indole-containing molecules under acidic conditions to form intensely coloured complexes, allowing rapid and sensitive visual or spectrophotometric detection. Due to its reliability and well-established chemistry, DMAB is extensively used in microbiology, biochemistry, pharmaceutical research, and quality-control laboratories.
Ausamics DMAB is supplied as reagent grade material with controlled purity to ensure consistent performance and reproducible analytical results.

Principle of the Reagent
Under acidic conditions, DMAB condenses with indole functional groups to form a coloured Schiff-base-type complex. The resulting colour intensity correlates with the presence of indole compounds, enabling rapid qualitative or semi-quantitative detection in biochemical and microbiological assays.
