Arginine Brilliant-Green Glucose Peptone Broth
Arginine Brilliant-Green Glucose Peptone Broth (ABGP)
Selective Enrichment Broth for Group B Streptococcus (GBS)
Catalog Number: AS-1122
Overview
Arginine Brilliant-Green Glucose Peptone Broth (ABGP) is a selective enrichment medium originally developed by Schubert (1966) for the isolation of Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus, GBS) from mixed microbial populations. It has been used for enrichment from clinical specimens (vaginal and rectal swabs, neonatal samples) as well as raw milk and dairy products.
The selectivity of ABGP Broth is achieved through the combined action of arginine, brilliant-green dye, and nalidixic acid, which strongly inhibit Gram-negative bacteria, enterococci, staphylococci, and most non-GBS streptococci. Under these conditions, GBS grows luxuriantly and produces a characteristic colour change from purple to yellow, resulting from arginine deamination followed by glucose fermentation.
ABGP Broth has been recommended in several older European protocols (notably in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria) as an alternative or complementary enrichment medium to LIM or Todd–Hewitt broth.
Applications
-
Selective enrichment of Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus) from mixed clinical samples
-
Screening of pregnant women for GBS carriage (typically at 35–37 weeks gestation)
-
Detection of Group B Streptococcus in raw milk and dairy products
-
Use as an alternative or complement to LIM or Todd–Hewitt enrichment media
Key Features & Benefits
-
Highly selective enrichment broth for Group B Streptococcus
-
Brilliant-green dye and nalidixic acid suppress most competing flora
-
Arginine promotes strong GBS growth and characteristic metabolic response
-
Built-in colour indicator system (purple → yellow) for presumptive detection
-
Historically validated formulation still used in selected laboratories
