APT Agar (All-Purpose Tween 80 Agar) for Lactic Acid Bacteria Cultivation
APT Agar (All-Purpose Tween 80 Agar)
Enhanced Medium for Lactic Acid Bacteria
Catalog Number: AS-1120
Overview
APT Agar (All-Purpose Tween 80 Agar) is a non-selective culture medium designed to support the enhanced growth of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), particularly heterofermentative species such as Lactobacillus, Leuconostoc, and Lactococcus.
The medium contains a rich combination of peptone, yeast extract, glucose, mineral salts, and Tween 80, providing essential nutrients and growth factors required by fastidious LAB. Tween 80 supplies fatty acids, which are critical for membrane synthesis and metabolism in lactobacilli, resulting in improved colony development and recovery.
APT Agar is widely used for the isolation and enumeration of lactic acid bacteria from food and beverage samples and is also suitable for microbiological assays of thiamine (vitamin B₁) due to its ability to support the growth of thiamine-dependent organisms.
Key Features & Benefits
-
Non-selective medium supporting a wide range of lactic acid bacteria
-
Especially suitable for heterofermentative LAB
-
Tween 80 provides essential fatty acids for improved growth
-
Supports organisms with high vitamin and nutrient requirements
-
Suitable for food microbiology and vitamin assay applications
Typical Applications
-
Isolation and enumeration of lactic acid bacteria from:
-
Meat products
-
Dairy products
-
Fruit juices and beverages
-
-
Cultivation of Lactobacillus, Leuconostoc, and Lactococcus species
-
Microbiological assays of thiamine (vitamin B₁)
-
Research and quality-control testing in food microbiology laboratories
Principle of the Medium
APT Agar provides a nutrient-rich environment through peptones and yeast extract, while glucose serves as an easily fermentable carbohydrate source. Tween 80 supplies fatty acids essential for the metabolism and membrane integrity of lactic acid bacteria, promoting reliable growth and recovery of fastidious LAB strains.
Storage & Stability
-
Dehydrated medium: Store at 15–30 °C in a cool, dry place
-
Prepared medium: Store at 2–8 °C and use within the recommended shelf life
Intended Use
For laboratory use only.
Not for human, veterinary, food, feed, or pharmaceutical use.
