Cetrimide Agar Base

Selective medium for isolation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Cetrimide Agar Base is a selective culture medium designed for the isolation and presumptive identification of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from clinical, environmental, and industrial samples. Cetrimide suppresses most competing microbiota, while magnesium chloride and potassium sulfate enhance pyocyanin production for clearer presumptive identification.

🔬 Product Overview

Cetrimide Agar Base is formulated for the selective isolation and presumptive identification of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from mixed microbial populations. It is commonly used where reliable recovery of this organism is needed from clinical specimens, environmental waters, surfaces, and industrial hygiene samples.

The medium uses cetrimide, a quaternary ammonium compound, to inhibit the growth of many non-target organisms by disrupting cell membranes. P. aeruginosa shows natural tolerance under these selective conditions, enabling preferential recovery.

Magnesium chloride and potassium sulfate promote production of pyocyanin, the characteristic blue-green pigment that supports presumptive recognition of typical colonies.

⚗️ Principle of the Medium

Cetrimide Agar Base combines selective inhibition with pigment enhancement for practical presumptive identification:

Cetrimide present in medium

Inhibition of most competing organisms

Selective recovery of P. aeruginosa

Magnesium chloride + potassium sulfate

Enhanced pyocyanin production

Blue-green pigmented colonies
Interpretation note: typical P. aeruginosa colonies may show blue-green pigmentation due to pyocyanin production, while most non-target organisms are inhibited or markedly suppressed.

🧫 Applications

🏥 Clinical Microbiology

Isolation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from clinical specimens where selective recovery is required.

💧 Water Monitoring

Environmental monitoring of water systems and enumeration of P. aeruginosa in manufacturing or distribution systems.

🏭 Industrial Hygiene

Suitable for environmental and hygiene testing in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and manufacturing facilities.

🧪 Routine QC

Useful in routine quality control and environmental monitoring programs where P. aeruginosa must be screened selectively.
