Overview
Cycloheximide is a potent inhibitor of eukaryotic protein synthesis, widely used in microbiological, cell biology, and molecular biology research. It acts by binding to the 60S ribosomal subunit of eukaryotic cells, thereby blocking translational elongation and effectively inhibiting protein synthesis.
Due to this mechanism, cycloheximide is commonly used to suppress fungal and yeast growth in microbiological culture media. Most bacteria are naturally resistant to cycloheximide, making it useful for selectively inhibiting eukaryotic organisms without significantly affecting bacterial populations.
Applications
-
Suppression of fungal and yeast growth in microbiological media
-
Studies of eukaryotic protein synthesis and translation
-
Cell biology research involving protein turnover and stability
-
Experimental investigation of ribosomal function in eukaryotes
Mechanism of Action
Cycloheximide binds to the 60S ribosomal subunit in eukaryotic cells, inhibiting peptide chain elongation during translation. This results in rapid and effective inhibition of protein synthesis in fungi and other eukaryotic organisms.
