Glycine, Food Grade (Aminoacetic Acid)
C₂H₅NO₂ · CAS 56-40-6 · MW 75.07 g/mol · Assay 98.5–101.5%
Glycine is the simplest amino acid: a white, sweet-tasting crystalline powder that dissolves readily in water. Benario BA-1001 meets BP, USP and FCC monographs and is supplied with a batch Certificate of Analysis for food and supplement manufacturing, including hydration powders and sports foods.
Overview
Glycine (aminoacetic acid) is a non-essential amino acid and the simplest of all amino acids. In food and supplement manufacturing it is used as an amino acid source, a mild sweetener (about 70% as sweet as sucrose) and a pH buffer in powder blends. It dissolves quickly and clearly in water, which makes it well suited to powdered drinks.
Also known as: aminoacetic acid, glycocoll, 2-aminoacetic acid, Gly, G, INS 640.

Regulatory Information (Australia)
Glycine is a permitted amino acid in formulated supplementary sports foods under Standard 2.9.4 of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code, subject to a maximum amount per one-day quantity listed in Schedule 29. Manufacturers are responsible for confirming the regulatory category and permitted levels of their finished products.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is glycine used for in supplements?
Glycine is a non-essential amino acid used in powdered drinks, capsules and tablets as an amino acid source. It also adds a mild sweetness and helps buffer pH in powder blends.
Is glycine permitted in sports supplements in Australia?
Yes. Glycine is a permitted amino acid in formulated supplementary sports foods under Standard 2.9.4 of the Food Standards Code, with a maximum amount per one-day quantity set in Schedule 29. The finished-product manufacturer confirms the category and levels.
How pure is Benario Glycine BA-1001?
The assay specification is 98.5–101.5% on the dried basis, meeting the British Pharmacopoeia, USP and Food Chemicals Codex monographs. The current lot assays at 99.4%.
Is glycine soluble in water?
Yes. Glycine is freely soluble in water, about 250 g per litre at 25 °C, giving a clear, colourless solution with a pH of about 6.
Does glycine contain allergens?
Glycine is a single synthetic substance. No allergenic materials listed in the Food Standards Code are used as ingredients.
