Overview

Phenol Red Powder (Phenolsulfonphthalein) is a widely used laboratory pH indicator supplied in solid powder form for controlled research applications. It is commonly incorporated into cell culture media and microbiological formulations to allow visual monitoring of pH changes during growth and metabolic activity.

The dye exhibits a clear colour transition from yellow under acidic conditions to red under neutral to mildly alkaline conditions, making it a reliable indicator of environmental pH within culture systems. Due to its stability and well-characterised behaviour, Phenol Red is a standard component in many research and teaching laboratories.

Ausamics Phenol Red Powder is supplied as a high-quality bioreagent, offering consistent colour response, solubility, and batch-to-batch reliability.

Typical Applications

Cell Culture Research

  • Visual monitoring of pH changes in culture media

  • Supportive indicator for metabolic activity in cell growth systems

Microbiology & Laboratory Research

  • pH indicator in liquid and solid media

  • Observation of acid or base production during microbial growth

Research & Teaching Laboratories

  • Demonstration of pH-dependent colour indicators

  • Method development and experimental optimisation

Principle of the Indicator

Phenol Red responds to changes in hydrogen ion concentration by altering its molecular structure, resulting in a visible colour shift. It appears yellow in acidic environments (approximately pH < 6.8) and transitions to red in neutral to alkaline environments (approximately pH > 8.2). This behaviour allows rapid visual assessment of pH trends in laboratory media under controlled conditions.
