APT Broth
APT Broth (All-Purpose Tween 80 Broth)
Nutrient-Rich Medium for Lactic Acid Bacteria
Catalog Number: AS-1121
Overview
APT (All-Purpose Tween 80) Broth is a nutrient-rich liquid medium used for the cultivation of lactic acid bacteria, including Lactobacillus viridescens ATCC 12706. It is commonly employed in thiamine (vitamin B₁) microbiological assays and in the enrichment and examination of lactic acid bacteria from food and environmental samples.
The formulation of APT Broth is comparable to that of APT Agar but without a solidifying agent. It is recommended by the American Public Health Association (APHA) for the microbiological examination of lactic acid bacteria in meat, dairy products, and vegetables.
Applications
-
Cultivation of lactic acid bacteria
-
Thiamine (vitamin B₁) microbiological assays
-
Enrichment of lactic acid bacteria from food samples
-
Microbiological examination of meat, dairy, and vegetable products
-
General laboratory and food microbiology applications
Key Features & Benefits
-
Nutrient-rich formulation supporting fastidious lactic acid bacteria
-
Contains Tween 80 to enhance fatty acid availability
-
Suitable for thiamine assay test organisms
-
Recommended by APHA for food microbiology
-
Liquid format for enrichment and propagation
Principle of the Medium
APT Broth provides a balanced combination of nitrogen sources, carbohydrates, vitamins, and growth factors required by lactic acid bacteria. The presence of polysorbate 80 (Tween 80) supplies essential fatty acids, while yeast extract and enzymatic protein hydrolysates support robust growth. Metallic salts are required for optimal growth of lactic acid bacteria in this medium.
Typical Composition
APT Broth typically contains:
-
Yeast extract
-
Dextrose
-
Casein enzymic hydrolysate
-
Polysorbate 80 (Tween 80)
-
Metallic salts
(Exact composition may vary between batches.)
Storage & Stability
-
