Bile Peptone Transport Medium
Bile Peptone Transport Medium
Selective Transport Medium for Enteric Pathogens
Catalog Number: AS-1142
Overview
Bile Peptone Transport Medium is a selective, non-nutritive transport medium designed for the preservation and transport of enteric bacteria, particularly Salmonella spp., from food, water, environmental, and clinical samples to the laboratory.
The formulation contains bile salts to suppress Gram-positive organisms and competing background flora, while peptone maintains bacterial viability without supporting multiplication. This ensures that target organisms remain viable during transport while preventing overgrowth and changes in the original microbial population.
Bile Peptone Transport Medium is commonly used as a holding medium prior to selective enrichment or plating, making it an essential component of food safety, water testing, and public-health microbiology workflows.
Applications
-
Transport of Salmonella spp. from food, feed, and environmental samples
-
Preservation of enteric pathogens during sample transit
-
Holding medium prior to selective enrichment (RV, SC, Tetrathionate)
-
Food safety, water microbiology, and environmental monitoring
Key Features
-
Selective bile salts inhibit Gram-positive bacteria
-
Maintains organism viability without allowing growth
-
Prevents overgrowth during transport
-
Simple, stable formulation suitable for routine field sampling
-
Fully compatible with downstream enrichment and selective plating media
Principle of the Medium
-
Bile salts inhibit Gram-positive organisms and non-target flora
-
Peptone provides minimal nutrients to maintain cell integrity
-
Non-nutritive design preserves the original microbial load
This ensures accurate recovery of enteric pathogens during laboratory analysis.
