Overview
Cefoperazone Powder is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic widely used in microbiology for selective media preparation and antimicrobial research applications. It exhibits broad-spectrum activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including clinically significant organisms such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Due to its stability and activity profile, cefoperazone is commonly incorporated into selective culture media formulations to suppress competing flora while permitting the growth of target organisms.
Mechanism of Action
Cefoperazone is a beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential enzymes involved in peptidoglycan cross-linking during cell wall formation. By inhibiting PBPs, cefoperazone disrupts the final stages of cell wall assembly, leading to structural instability and eventual bacterial cell lysis through autolysin-mediated degradation.
