🔬 Principle of Selectivity
In the presence of iodine, thiosulfate is converted to tetrathionate, which inhibits coliforms and many Gram-negative competitors while allowing Salmonella spp. to proliferate.
Bile salts and nutrient-rich peptones support recovery of stressed cells commonly encountered in food and environmental testing.
