Mitis Salivarius Agar
Selective Medium for Streptococcus mutans, S. sobrinus & Oral Streptococci
Classic selective solid medium for the isolation, differentiation, and enumeration of viridans streptococci from the oral cavity, especially cariogenic species such as Streptococcus mutans, S. sobrinus, and S. salivarius. Mitis Salivarius Agar remains one of the most widely used reference media in dental caries research and oral microbiology laboratories worldwide.

🧪 Complete Formulation & Selective Principle
📋 Standard Composition (per Liter)
Final pH: 7.2 ± 0.2 at 25°C
📋 Optional Selective MSB Modification
MSB (Mitis Salivarius Bacitracin):
Bacitracin 0.2–0.5 units/mL + elevated sucrose content for increased selectivity toward S. mutans and S. sobrinus, with stronger suppression of S. salivarius.

Why Mitis Salivarius Agar? It is one of the most established media for oral streptococci isolation and remains central to dental caries studies, plaque microbiology, and oral diagnostic workflows.
Complete Dental & Oral Microbiology Media Portfolio
Strategic Medium Selection for Oral Streptococci Isolation
✅ Mitis Salivarius Agar Advantages
- ✓ Classic Dental Standard: Long-established medium in caries microbiology
- ✓ Clear Morphological Differentiation: Distinctive colony types for oral streptococci
- ✓ Selective Oral Streptococci Recovery: Useful for saliva, plaque, and carious lesions
- ✓ Research-Proven: Widely used in dental studies and risk assessment programs
- ✓ MSB Upgrade Path: Can be adapted for stronger mutans streptococci selectivity
⚠️ Method Considerations
- ▲ Tellurite Must Be Added After Sterilization: Critical for proper selectivity
- ▲ Selective, Not Absolute: Some non-target organisms may still appear in small numbers
- ▲ Morphology Interpretation Requires Experience: Colony reading improves with training
- ▲ Maximum S. mutans Selectivity May Need Bacitracin: MSB version may be preferred for some applications
🎯 Best-Fit Applications
- ◆ Caries Research: Quantitative mutans streptococci culture
- ◆ Dental Risk Assessment: Saliva and plaque-based screening
- ◆ Oral Microbiology Labs: Differentiation of viridans streptococci
- ◆ University Research Programs: Colony morphology and enumeration workflows
📊 Typical Colony Morphology (48–72 h)
💰 Recommended Pack Sizes & Market-Beating Pricing
Recommended pricing position: place AuSaMicS as premium-performance but below Oxoid/Merck pricing, while clearly stronger in presentation and support than low-cost commodity brands.
