Overview

MRS Agar (de Man, Rogosa and Sharpe Agar) is a selective, nutrient-rich medium developed for the cultivation of lactic acid bacteria, particularly Lactobacillus species.

The formulation provides peptides, amino acids, vitamins, carbohydrates, mineral salts and buffering components that support LAB growth while creating conditions less favourable for many competing microorganisms.

Recommended for LAB work: MRS Agar is widely used in food, dairy, probiotic and fermentation microbiology where recovery and enumeration of lactic acid bacteria are required.
Applications
Application Typical Use
Lactobacillus cultivation Isolation, maintenance and enumeration of Lactobacillus species
Lactic acid bacteria Recovery and cultivation of other LAB from food and fermentation samples
Food & dairy microbiology Yoghurt, cheese, fermented foods and related quality-control applications
Probiotic research Research, screening and quality-control work involving probiotic LAB
Fermentation studies Academic and industrial studies involving carbohydrate utilisation and LAB growth
Key Features

Nutrient rich: provides multiple nitrogen sources, growth factors and fermentable carbohydrate for LAB.

Selective environment: formulation conditions favour lactic acid bacteria over many competing organisms.

Convenient format: supplied as a dehydrated powder for routine laboratory preparation.

Quality documentation: lot-specific COA, SDS and technical documentation are available.
