Salmonella Detection Media Set
Culture media for the pre-enrichment, dual selective enrichment, and selective/differential isolation stages of Salmonella detection. Designed to support the culture-media stages of the ISO 6579-1 workflow — see "What this set does and doesn't cover" in the FAQ below.
$359 $378 individually Save $19 as a set
Includes
  • BPW 500 g — AS-1160
  • RVS Broth 500 g — AS-1338
  • MKTTn Broth Base 500 g — AS-1301
  • XLD Agar 500 g — AS-1378
⚠ Before you order: MKTTn Broth Base requires two additions immediately before use — Lugol's Solution 5% and Novobiocin Sodium Salt. Neither is heat-stable, so neither can be pre-mixed into the dehydrated base — they're sold separately below and must be added by the user just before inoculation.

Required additives — must be added to MKTTn before use

Required for MKTTn
Lugol's Solution 5% (Iodine/Potassium Iodide)
AS-54002
Added to MKTTn Broth Base immediately before use — not heat-stable, cannot be autoclaved into the base powder. Essential for correct tetrathionate function.
$29 50 mL (100 mL also available)
Add Lugol's Solution →
Required for MKTTn
Novobiocin Sodium Salt
ASA-2035
The "n" in MKTTn. Added after autoclaving (heat-labile) to suppress Gram-positive background flora and competing Proteus spp.
$55 1 g (2.5 g / 5 g / 10 g also available)
Add Novobiocin →

Recommended complementary media — for plating & confirmation

Second Plating Medium
Brilliant Green Agar (BGA)
AS-1150
ISO 6579-1:2017 calls for streaking each enrichment broth onto XLD plus a second selective/differential agar chosen by the laboratory. Brilliant Green Agar (BGA) is one of the most widely used choices for that second medium — strong inhibition of E. coli/Proteus/Pseudomonas via brilliant green dye and phenol red, giving pink-red Salmonella colonies.
$35 100 g (500 g also available)
Add BGA →
Biochemical Confirmation
TSI Agar (Triple Sugar Iron)
AS-1365
Confirms presumptive colonies from XLD/BGA via glucose/lactose/sucrose fermentation and H2S production pattern, ahead of further biochemical or serological confirmation. Formulated to ISO 6579 / FDA-BAM standards.
$35 100 g (500 g also available)
Add TSI Agar →
Biochemical Confirmation
Urea Broth (Stuart)
AS-1374
High-buffer Stuart's formulation — rules out urease-positive Proteus spp., which can otherwise mimic Salmonella on TSI (H2S-positive, non-lactose fermenting). Salmonella is urease-negative.
$29 100 g (500 g / 2.5 kg / 10 kg also available)
Add Urea Broth →

Frequently asked questions

Q1: What does this set cover, and what doesn't it include?
This set covers the culture-media stages of Salmonella detection: pre-enrichment (BPW), dual selective enrichment (RVS and MKTTn run in parallel), and selective/differential plating (XLD). It does not by itself constitute the complete ISO 6579-1 testing and confirmation procedure. MKTTn also requires two additives not included in this set — Lugol's Solution and Novobiocin, both above. Confirmed identification of presumptive colonies requires further biochemical testing (e.g. TSI Agar, Urea Broth) and, where required, serological confirmation — see the complementary media above.
Q2: Why does the workflow use two selective enrichment broths (RVS and MKTTn) instead of one?
RVS Broth and MKTTn Broth have different selective chemistries — RVS relies on magnesium chloride and malachite green at 41.5 °C, while MKTTn relies on tetrathionate, iodine and novobiocin at 37 °C. Different Salmonella serovars and matrices respond better to one broth than the other, so running both in parallel from the same BPW pre-enrichment improves overall recovery.
Q3: What incubation conditions does each medium require?
BPW: 37 °C ± 1 °C for 16–20 hours (pre-enrichment). RVS Broth: 41.5 °C ± 1 °C for 24 ± 3 hours. MKTTn Broth: 37 °C ± 1 °C for 24 ± 3 hours. XLD Agar plates: 37 °C ± 1 °C for 24 hours, read for typical red/pink colonies with black (H2S-positive) centres. ISO 6579-1:2017/Amd 1:2020 broadened several incubation ranges to 34–38 °C — always confirm the exact parameters against your accredited method or the current standard before reporting results.
Q4: Should I plate onto a second selective agar as well as XLD?
Yes — ISO 6579-1:2017 requires streaking each enrichment broth onto XLD plus a second selective/differential agar chosen by the laboratory (not specified by name in the standard). Brilliant Green Agar (BGA) is one of the most commonly used choices and is available as a complementary medium above; Bismuth Sulphite Agar and chromogenic Salmonella agars are other options some laboratories use instead.
Q5: Are individual products available separately?
Yes — all four products are available individually from the AuSaMicS catalogue. Buying them as this set saves approximately 5% versus ordering each item separately. For bulk quantities or custom configurations, contact support@ausamics.com.

Laboratory Use Only — BSL-2 Handling Required. Supplied for in vitro laboratory use by trained personnel; Salmonella spp. is pathogenic and must be handled under Biosafety Level 2 containment. This set covers the culture-media stages of the ISO 6579-1:2017 workflow only — it is not a complete reference method, and results intended for regulatory, export, or public-health reporting should follow a validated, accredited method.
